US Sailing Youth Multihull Championships (4-Nov-2008)

Hello All,

The HCA Youth Program has been informed and is working on full support of the US Sailing Youth Multihull Championships in Long Beach, California in January. This is short notice. The event is on H16 w/SPI. I personally am very motivated to make a showing to US Sailing and the sailing world at large of the level of support the HCA can bring to bare when they are using our boat, since last year the 'SL16' usage was not very impressive.

I am attaching the NOR, youth program grant requirements and our current list of youth membership. We are leaning heavily on the Division Chairs to contact experienced youth racers to attend this event, if it is at all possible for them to do so. A few teams have already committed to come. We want no stone left unturned. The HCA Youth Program is prepared to fully back teams that feel they can compete in this major event. I am asking for a phone and email effort to contact youth racers in your division to make sure everyone has the opportunity to get into this event.

The factory is providing 10 new boats, which will then go on to the ISAF Youth World Multihulls. This event is the USA qualifier for the world event. We will be working on local charter boats from Hobie 16 racers in the region convenient to Long Beach. The factory is giving a special rate on spin kits for this particular event. The HCA Youth Program will endeavor to support all aspects of expense to bring this event about for our youth racers. Please take note that we are interested in racers with sufficient desire, enthusiasm and and in particular experience to contend at this level. Obviously, they will be competing with youngsters who are not members of the HCA, and who are well trained. I believe our youngsters can make an excellent showing and perhaps dominate this event.

I apologize for the short notice, and certainly will have a better handle on the 2010 event. Please do whatever possible to get back with your interested youth, as the charter boats from the factory will be going to those furthest out, and who apply first. Probably in that order. We will need to take up the slack with good boats locally. Age limitation is must be born in 1991 or later. There is no minimum weight requirement for this double-handed event.

Thank you kindly for your attention to this very important matter.

Gordo Bagley
HCA Youth Program Director.

Report of the Hobie Class Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) (9-Sep-2008)
9 September 2008 Hobie 16 North American Championships, Clear Lake, IA

Although I attended the AGM via conference call, I think that the notes below accurately reflect the meeting. Essentially it was a 3 hour call, with a good deal of discussion of most issues. The Agenda for the meeting, along with reports for each Division, can be viewed online at http://www.hca-na.org/ by clicking “annual meeting” under the drop down menu for “Class Info”.

Treasurers Report: (Steve Reese) The HCA has a reasonably large sum of money (donated from the Hobie Cat Company) that we need to use, so as to maintain our social club status for tax purposes. The money should be used to promote racing, particularly youth racing. Even if it is a loose interpretation of these guidelines, a good proposal would be seriously considered. Contact me with any ideas you have for a proposal ASAP.

Two proposals were submitted for the 2009 North American Championships. One was from CORK in Kingston, ONT (to take place in July of 2009) and the other was for a Mega (multi-class event) to take place in Lake Havasu, Arizona in November. The Lake Havasu site won, with the provision that if a preliminary bid by Italy (Tuscany) for the Worlds is approved for October, 2009, that we should re-think the North American Championships. It is worth saying, though, that there is no guarantee that CORK will still be available at that time. You can see details of each proposal in the report of the AGM.

The following people were elected to serve the HCA for the 2008-2009 year: Chairman Chris Wessels 1st Vice-Chair Pat Porter 2nd Vice-Chair: Donna McIntosh Secretary Kathy Ward (incumbent) Treasurer John Mork Youth Program Gordon Bagley Membership Mike Levesque GEP Program Kim Edmonds (incumbent) Event Coordinator Bridgette Quatrone Race Director Matt Bounds

Many Congratulations to Division 16’s own Bridgette Quatrone for being selected Event Coordinator!!

An HCA Policy proposal was passed that has direct implications for our local regattas, in particular those (like Canandaigua) that are being held by non-HCA organizations. The proposal follows, reprinted in its entirety.

HCA Ranking System Proposal Proposed by Bob Merrick and Chris Wessels

Proposal:

Results from the following types of events shall count towards the HCA Regional Rakings.

  1. All events in which the HCA and/or an associated HCA Division and/or HCA fleet is the Organizing Authority. These events shall be HCA One-Design events. An HCA One-Design events is an event that conforms to the HCA One-Design policy. An explanation of this policy is available on the HCA website.
  2. Up to three additional events in each HCA Division in which the Organizing Authority is not affiliated with the HCA. These events are subject to the following conditions.

Each Hobie Class (i.e. Hobie 16 or Hobie 20) in which ranking points will be awarded must

a) have at least five boats competing.
b) have a separate, one-design start.
c) compete using Hobie Class rules.

For an event to qualify under option 2 the Division Chair in which the event is to be held shall make a request by contacting the HCA Chair for approval prior to the event. This should be done 3-6 months ahead of time so that all sailors can be properly notified.

Results should be sent to the HCA scorekeeper from an official associated with the event.

All individuals scored in the HCA Regional Ranking must be HCA members.

Reason:

Introducing Option 2 events will help Divisions that don't currently host HCA One-Design regattas pick a few events in which to focus participation as a one-design fleet. It will also give these Divisions an incentive to host a few HCA One-Design events so that sailors can count a full five events in the ranking.

In the more active Divisions this will work to get good turnout at select multi-class events which is good exposure for the Hobie Class.
